Transcript: This is the flag of Malaysia, and hereโ€™s the flag of the United States. Notice anything similar? Both flags feature red and white stripes with a blue square in the top left corner, but how did these two countries end up with such identical flags?

Well, The United States was the first to adopt this flag design in 1777. The red and white stripes represent the original 13 colonies, whereas, the 13 encircled stars showed unity. Over time, as more states joined the Union, additional stars were added until there were 50 stars in total representing every state in the country.

Fast forward to 1947, Malaysia was nearing its independence and organized a nationwide competition to design its new flag, where the winning design was inspired by the British East India Company’s flag and incorporated elements from the U.S. flag.

It featured 11 red and white stripes, with a blue canton containing a yellow crescent and an 11-point star, representing Islam and the unity of its states. After independence, the flag was later updated to represent all 14 of Malaysiaโ€™s states.
