The Umno Supreme Council has promised to utilise the party’s manpower to help the unity government’s candidate win the Sungai Bakap by-election.
PETALING JAYA: The Umno Supreme Council says the party will mobilise its entire party machinery to support the unity government’s candidate in the Sungai Bakap by-election on July 6.
The council, which met today, also said it has appointed Barisan Nasional secretary-general Zambry Abdul Kadir as the coalition’s election director for the by-election.
In a statement, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Penang Umno chief Musa Sheikh Fadzir has been appointed BN’s operations director for the by-election while Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan will head BN’s “war room”.
PKR has announced Joohari Ariffin as its candidate while Abidin Ismail of PAS will be contesting for Perikatan Nasional.
Earlier this month, the unity government appointed PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli and Zambry to drive the polls campaign for the Sungai Bakap by-election.
The state seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff, on May 24 from a stomach condition.
Zamri, who was the Nibong Tebal PAS chief, won the seat in the state election in August by defeating PH’s Nurhidayah Che Rose with a 1,563-vote majority after securing 15,433 votes.
Nominations for the by-election will take place on Saturday.
