Taiwan Currently Investigating SMIC And Others For Alleged Illegal Activities

Taiwanese authorities have accused Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), along with other Chinese tech companies for illegally operating on its soil. The island nation alleges that the company has been poaching its engineers, among other things.

In total, 11 companies, including SMIC, have reportedly breached Taiwan’s cross-strait regulations and “illegally set up offices without applying to the government and recruit Taiwanese engineers”.

“The investigation found that SMIC is using a Samoan-based company to hire engineers in Taiwan, according to the bureau. The probe also found that multiple Chinese companies are setting up illegal entities in Taiwan to hire engineers to work on projects in areas such as high-end networking chips and display driver chips. SMIC became the world’s third-largest contract chipmaker last year, after TSMC and Samsung Electronics, as it benefited from China’s push to localize chip production.” – Nikkei.
