PARIS: Stellantis said today that it will shutter its Chrysler factory in the Canadian city of Windsor for two weeks as the US-European auto giant seeks to adjust to high car tariffs imposed by the US.
A spokeswoman for Stellantis, which also owns the Jeep, Dodge and RAM truck brands, said the factory would close for two weeks beginning on April 7, confirming information announced by local trade union Unifor.
“It’s one of the actions that we must take immediately to adjust production,” the spokeswoman told AFP.
The factory, one of three Stellantis has in Canada, manufactures the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and the electric Dodge Charger.
The factory is located just across the river from Detroit and employs around 4,000.
The Unifor trade union said it was told the closure was primarily due to the 25% tariffs on imported cars and light trucks that the US will impose from today.
“The company said there are multiple factors at play, with the primary driver behind the final decision being this afternoon’s announcement from US President Donald Trump of the US tariffs,” the local Unifor chapter said on its Facebook page.
