PETALING JAYA: The Sabah assembly has elected Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) secretary-general Edward Linggu to represent the state in the Dewan Negara.

Linggu, 65, who is the chairman of the Sabah Rubber Industry Board, will replace Sabah Wanita Umno chief Noraini Idris, whose senatorship ends on Dec 9, Bernama reported.

Linggu, who is of the Dusun tribe, served as the Tamparuli assemblyman from 1999 to 2004 and is also a former chairman of the Sabah Credit Corporation.

Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor proposed him for the post, with 53 assemblymen voting in favour. The other 26 members of the state assembly were absent during the voting.

Noraini was elected a senator in 2021. The state government did not nominate her for a second term.

Sabah Umno sits in the opposition in the state assembly, although several assemblymen continue to back Hajiji.

Separately, the Terengganu assembly unanimously elected former Kemaman MP Che Alias Hamid as a Dewan Negara member.

Che Alias, 58, replaces Terengganu PAS chief Husain Awang, who has completed his two terms as a senator.
