PETALING JAYA: In an effort to affirm their commitment to a reduced carbon footprint, Pos Malaysia Bhd has joined the International Post Corporation (IPC) sustainability measurement and management system (SMMS) programme.
SMMS was launched in 2019 to address the sustainability objectives of the postal sector for the next ten years, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Pos Malaysia has committed to a 30% reduction in its scope one and two emissions by 2025, with aspirations to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040 instead of the more common 2050.
Scope one emissions come from direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, whilst scope two emissions are indirect and from the generation of purchased energy.
As the 22nd member, Pos Malaysia will benefit from a common third-party audited sustainability measurement and reporting system, including for carbon emissions.
SMMS also provides a benchmark against which post services can measure progress and strategies against other operators.
Emphasis is mainly on reducing emissions generated by buildings and transportation, which respectively account for 44% and 56% of their total emissions.
By 2030, IPC SMMS members collectively aim to have 50% of their fleet as alternative fuel vehicles (against 24% in 2021) and 75% of their energy consumed generated from renewable sources (against 34% in 2021).
“We are committed to upgrading our internal combustion engine (ICE) fleet to electric vehicles, improving the efficiency of our operations, and utilising cleaner energy sources by installing solar photovoltaic (PV) panels throughout our facilities,” said Pos Malaysia group CEO Charles Brewer.
At the close of trading today, Pos Malaysia’s share price was flat at 59 sen, giving it a market capitalisation of RM461.84 million.
