Next-gen Omoda C9 SUV teased with softer design

At today’s Omoda Day event that saw the introduction of the Omoda 3/C3, Shawn Xu, CEO of Omoda & Jaecoo International, teased the next-generation C9.

Internally known as the T29, the SUV will not only be sold as the Omoda C9 but also as a Chery offering called the Fulwin. This “same car, different names” approach isn’t new, as the current C9 we have in Malaysia is a rebadged Exeed RX (Yaoguang).

Little information on the next C9 was provided during Xu’s presentation, although we were given a chance to see a model of the SUV prior to today’s event, albeit with our cameras taped over so we can only describe what we saw. As the teaser suggests, the redesigned SUV adopts a curvier design with subtle creases that is a departure from the current model.

Notable design cues include slender headlamps with integrated daytime running lights, flush door handles and a front end that eschews a traditional grille for a wide lower intake. A plug-in hybrid powertrain looks to be definite judging by the fuel and charging port doors we spotted on the model.

As for the interior, we only got to see a rough mock-up with a large central infotainment touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster and a wraparound dashboard. The staff on hand at the time would not divulge any additional information beyond telling us that this is the new C9.

In addition to the C9, Xu also mentioned the CX, which appears to be an off-road-style buggy concept that is being explored. There is also an unnamed model seen next to the CX in the presentation slide, although there’s no indication on what it might be aside from it being part of a line-up of products aimed at “uniting global youth with passionate personalised models.”
