Bersatu MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan was referred to the Dewan Rakyat’s rights and privileges committee over his claim that court charges brought against him could be dropped if he declared support for the government.
PETALING JAYA: Bersatu MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan did not mislead the Dewan Rakyat in claiming that certain parties offered to drop his court charges if he supported the unity government, says a parliamentary panel.
The Dewan Rakyat’s rights and privileges committee said it found that Wan Saiful did meet these parties, who then offered parliamentary allocations, funds to foot his late wife’s medical expenses and to help have his court case dropped.
The committee also said the Tasek Gelugor MP’s claim did not affect the interests of parties involved in a matter before the court, namely Wan Saiful’s trial.
However, it said the authorities should probe Wan Saiful’s claim due to possible criminal elements, and recommended that the MP file a formal report with the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
“This committee is also concerned that further comments or statements concerning the matter could affect the interests of parties involved in (Wan Saiful’s trial).
“Therefore, this committee advises the Tasek Gelugor MP against making further statements on the matter,” said the committee chaired by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul.
Wan Saiful was referred to the Dewan Rakyat’s rights and privileges committee over his claim that court charges brought against him could be dropped if he declared support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government.
The Bersatu Supreme Council is standing trial on money laundering and corruption charges related to the Jana Wibawa scheme.
