PETALING JAYA: The education ministry will be conducting a reevaluation of the sports and co-curriculum assessment data for 2023 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students whose non-academic activity scores were omitted from their overall result in university applications.
The ministry said the data will be handed to the central university admissions unit (UPU) to match these students to the relevant subjects and programmes for them to further their studies, Bernama reported.
“The education ministry takes this issue seriously. Immediate action has been taken to re-assess the sports and co-curriculum data of the affected candidates,” it said in a statement.
It said it was also conducting a detailed investigation into the matter and will take measures to ensure that it does not recur in the future.
According to Bernama, SPM graduates who applied for places in higher education institutions through the UPU system were supposed to have the merit score calculation include 10% of the sports and co-curriculum score in addition to the exam results.
It was reported that the issue of sports and co-curriculum marks for SPM graduates being left empty resulted in students either failing in their application to continue their studies at higher education institutions or not receiving the desired course or programme for their higher studies.
