PETALING JAYA: Melaka assembly speaker Ibrahim Durum will hold discussions next week with the state legal adviser on whether the Rembia seat needs to be vacated after it was revealed that its assemblyman joined PAS last year.
Ibrahim said he would consult the legal adviser after Jailani Khamis failed to submit an official response on his decision to join PAS despite being given two weeks to do so, Bernama reported.
“The deadline for submitting the official response was this afternoon. I will hold a meeting (with the state legal adviser) next week upon my return from a working visit to Australia on Aug 8,” he was quoted as saying.
Yesterday, Ibrahim told FMT he gave Jailani two weeks from July 19 to submit an explanation.
Ibrahim also expressed hope that Jailani would respond to the letter by the time he returned from Australia on Aug 8.
On July 16, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan announced that Jailani, who had been suspended by Umno, had joined PAS in June 2023.
Takiyuddin said Jailani had not breached the anti-hopping law since Melaka’s enactment was only passed on July 31 that year.
However, a deputy executive councillor said Jailani had remained seated in the government bloc at state assembly meetings since last year despite purportedly already being a PAS member.
