KUCHING: Sarawak’s acquisition of rural airline MASwings, a subsidiary of Malaysia Aviation Group, will be finalised with the signing of a sale and purchase agreement on Wednesday next week (Feb 12).
The date was announced by state tourism minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in a dinner speech here tonight. Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg, who was at another dinner, declined to comment further. “Wait for the 12th. Be patient,” he told reporters when asked about Abdul Karim’s remark.
Last month, Abang Johari said Sarawak had completed its takeover of MASwings following a consensus on asset valuations reached between the Sarawak government and Malaysia Aviation Group.
When asked about the airline’s new name, Abang Johari said it would be revealed after the signing ceremony.
The airline operates eight ATR 72 twin-turboprop aircraft which can seat 68 passengers on regional routes, and six Twin Otter short-haul aircraft which can seat 19 on rural routes.
Abang Johari has previously spoken of the Sarawak airline operating to six international destinations in Germany, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia.
