A notice announcing Manoharan Periasamy’s appointment posted on Tourism Malaysia’s Facebook page earlier today.
PETALING JAYA: Manoharan Periasamy has been named Tourism Malaysia’s new director-general, replacing Ammar Abd Ghapar, who was controversially demoted to deputy director-general last week.
A notice announcing Manoharan’s appointment was posted on Tourism Malaysia’s Facebook page earlier today.
He previously served as Tourism Malaysia’s senior director for international promotion (Asia & Africa).
Last Saturday, tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing said Ammar had been demoted to deputy director-general after having been given many chances to improve his performance.
Tiong claimed that various state governments had complained about Ammar’s lack of engagement, and denied that his demotion was race-related.
Ammar confirmed his removal from the top post on Friday and expressed his dissatisfaction at having to vacate his position in such circumstances after having served the ministry for 36 years.
Ammar, who was appointed the director-general in April last year, is set to retire in March 2025.
