PETALING JAYA: A primary school in Johor Bahru has been ordered to close temporarily after 21 pupils suffered nausea and had breathing difficulties due to strong odour pollution.
Johor education and information committee chairman Aznan Tamin said that for now, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Maju Jaya is the only school that had been ordered to shut.
“For other schools, we will wait for the decision of the district disaster management committee, which is meeting this evening.
“Precautionary measures are in place in other schools, with everyone ordered to wear face masks,” Aznan said, according to Berita Harian.
Meanwhile, Kampung Maju Jaya village chief Roslan Hassan said the 21 pupils affected were aged between 10 to 12. They were from the school’s morning session.
He said the students were wearing face masks, but started to experience dry throats, had difficulty breathing and suffered nausea.
This led to medical workers from the Kempas health clinic being sent to treat them.
Roslan said the pupils were allowed to go home. The school’s afternoon session was cancelled as a precaution.
He urged the authorities to act on the issue and to prevent a recurrence, expressing concern for the wellbeing of children and senior citizens in his village.
Last Tuesday, a foul odour was reported in Taman Daya, Taman Mount Austin, Taman Istimewa and Kampung Melayu Pandan.
Environmental officials detected ammonia gas levels exceeding normal thresholds in the Sungai Pandan area in Kampung Melayu Pandan.
Unidentified packages were also discovered dumped along the banks of the Sungai Pandan tributary near Taman Daya.
On Friday, authorities found suspicious chemicals dumped on the banks of a Sungai Plentong tributary in the Desa Tropika industrial area in Johor Bahru, after complaints about a strong chemical odour.
