SAARISELKA: Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni today said she was happy with the current interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi, after a court ruling cleared the way for deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini to potentially take that role.
On Friday, an Italian court acquitted Salvini of charges of kidnapping more than 100 migrants on board a boat he had blocked at sea for nearly three weeks in 2019 when he was interior minister, as part of a policy to curb illegal immigration.
“Both I and Matteo Salvini we are happy of the great work of our current interior minister,” Meloni told a press conference after an EU summit on security in Finland when the verdict meant Salvini could return to be interior minister.
Salvini, the leader of the League party, is serving as transport minister in Meloni’s government.
