G-SHOCK x AGAINST LAB Go Retro With Cassette-Inspired DW-5600AL24!

Casio has announced another stunning collaboration model with the fashion brand, AGAINST LAB. The limited-edition G-SHOCK DW-5600AL24 will launch in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Origins Of The DW-5600

Founded in the 1980s, the DW-5600 model inherits the DNA of the very first G-SHOCK, whose square design symbolises Casio’s tireless efforts and continuous innovation. A slapshot by a professional hockey player sent this G-SHOCK into history, and literally, into a goalie’s mitt. This is the quintessential G-SHOCK, born from a developer’s belief that he could create a watch that would not break even if dropped. In terms of specifications, it is definitely shock-resistant, has a 200-metre water resistance, and has a backlight ability to display text or features, allowing for better visibility in the dark.

Concept Of Nostalgia, Music & Way Of Life

This special collaboration model takes inspiration from The Universal Language that connects us all – music. Specifically, it takes us back to the era of cassettes (1970s – 1990s). Despite the changing times, cassettes still hold a special place in the hearts of many music lovers, as they represent a time when music was more than just a commodity; it was a way of life.

Drawing inspiration from AGAINST’s deep influence from Hip-Hop, and the Casio G-SHOCK DW-5600 model boasting a strong retro aesthetic that pairs well with the cassette tape’s appearance, the two brands conjured up the AGAINST x G-SHOCK DW-5600 “The Universal Language” watch.

Special Watch Design Inspired By Cassette Tapes

The design language of cassette-tape components is adopted as the main design element for this collaboration. The overall look is a matte white base, decorated with unique details of the cassette tape.

Circular elements in a pop-of-colour – representative of neon colour coding labels, the AGAINST LAB logo printed in typewriter font similar to that of label name stickers for cassette tapes, and subtle screw designs that can commonly be found on cassette tapes holding the mechanism together, adorn the watch band. The loop of the watchband also has ‘side’ indication (A-SIDE) designs printed on it, further elevating the look.

A clean ‘AGAINST’ label in bright pink is on the watch face, accompanied by a unique LED backlight logo representative of sound wave graphs, relating back to the influence of music on this watch collab. Finally, the whole concept is solidified with the AGAINST LAB ‘A’ logo, engraved on the case back for bold simplicity.

Special Packaging

The special box packaging sports a retro black-and white-look in an old paper texture as the background. The box is also decorated with the same neon colour coding labels and typewriter-font label elements. The watch title ‘THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE’ is printed on the box for emphasis.

The tin that holds the watch has a silver chrome finishing, and the collaborators’ names – G-SHOCK/ AGAINST LAB printed around it. For the finishing touch, the AGAINST LAB logo is delicately printed on the tin cover.

Special Pop-Up Store

Alongside of this collaboration, the two brands are launching “The Universal Language” pop-up store for 10-days from 25th May 2024 to 3rd June 2024 at 34, Lorong 1/77A, Pudu. The space will be decorated with a retro record shop concept, inviting G-SHOCK and AGAINST LAB fans to experience an authentic ambience with old-school cassette players and radios. Get a chance to hold the vintage audio equipment and immerse yourself in the music experience of the old days with mixtapes and radio and the world of G-SHOCK x AGAINST LAB.  

At this pop-up store, you’ll be able to explore the new DW-5600AL24 and the G-SHOCK Iconic Style Collections. Every purchase of the new DW-5600AL24 at the pop-up store or the AGAINST LAB webstore will come with “The Universal Language Beat Tape” by FRANCO.$. Additionally, the first eight customers who spend RM1,500 or more on a single receipt will receive a customised acrylic box case engineered by Lucentcase.

This fantastic piece will be available at the G-SHOCK x AGAINST LAB “The Universal Language” Pop-up store, and later on the CASIO Malaysia official website and Lazada store, the AGAINST LAB webstore, G-SHOCK stores, selected key dealer stores, and Atmos KL, retailing at RM595.
