SHAH ALAM: Celebrity preacher Syed Shah Iqmal Syed Shaiful, known as Da’i Syed, has been granted a stay of execution of his jail sentence for rape pending his appeal against his conviction.
High Court judge Aslam Zainuddin allowed the stay of execution until his appeal was heard and decided.
One of his lawyers, Abu Bakar Isa Ramat, confirmed the matter.
Da’i Syed was sentenced to 10 years’ jail and three strokes of the cane on Aug 30 after he was found guilty of raping a 23-year-old woman in a condominium apartment five years ago.
He had been discharged and acquitted last year when the sessions court held that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against him.
However, the High Court allowed the prosecution’s appeal and ordered Syed Shah Iqmal to enter his defence.
