Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he would return to Kuala Lumpur on Jan 25 and hand over his passport on Jan 27.
PETALING JAYA: The Court of Appeal has allowed Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman a temporary release of his passport to travel to Singapore.
Syed Saddiq’s counsel Hisyam Teh Poh Teik presented the application to the court today, Bernama reported.
The three-judge panel comprising Justices Che Ruzima Ghazali, Zaini Mazlan and Noorin Badaruddin allowed the application after Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Asraf Tahir did not object to it.
In his application, Syed Saddiq, 32, stated that he has to attend a symposium titled “Youth and Civic Engagement” in Singapore on Jan 21.
He also intends to attend the wedding of a close friend in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on Jan 22, and will only return to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, Jan 25. He promised to hand over his passport to the court on Monday, Jan 27.
Syed Saddiq’s legal team also includes lawyers Low Wei Loke and Jonas Ee.
Previously, the appellate court allowed the temporary release of his passport for work trips to Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and Singapore.
In November 2023, Syed Saddiq was sentenced to a total of seven years in prison and fined RM10 million after being convicted of abetting criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of assets, and money laundering. He was also sentenced to three years’ imprisonment with one stroke on the CBT charge.
Justice Azhar Abdul Hamid also sentenced Syed Saddiq to another two years in prison and one stroke of the rotan for the embezzlement of assets belonging to the youth wing of Bersatu.
Both of these sentences are to run consecutively, meaning he will serve a total of five years in prison.
Azhar also imposed a prison term of two years each for the two counts of money laundering, and a fine of RM5 million each. Both sentences are to run concurrently.
The judge, however, allowed an application by the defence to stay the sentences pending appeal.
The Court of Appeal is scheduled to hear his appeal on March 19 and 20.
