Car plunges into river, driver rescued, 2 still missing

SIBU: Two people are still missing after the car they were travelling in with another person plunged into Batang Rajang river near the Tanjung Kunyit Ferry Jetty, 15km from here, early today.

Sibu police chief Zulkipli Suhaili said a search and rescue operation, involving the police, fire and rescue department and the Civil Defence Force, was mounted after police were alerted of the incident at 2am.

“The first victim, a 38-year-old man, was found at 7.30am and taken to Sibu Hospital. His condition is reported to be stable.

“The search for the other two victims continues,” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak fire and rescue department’s operations centre said the rescued victim was the driver of the car.

It identified one of the two missing victims as Philip Yiin, 61.
