PETALING JAYA: The Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) will convene a special meeting in Penang from Tuesday to Thursday to discuss recent developments in the region, particularly the earthquake that hit Myanmar and Thailand last month.
AICHR said it will explore measures to support a comprehensive and effective whole-of Asean response to the March 28 disaster, which has killed at least 3,354 people in Myanmar and 23 in Thailand, primarily in the capital Bangkok.
The meeting will be the second under the leadership of Edmund Bon, Malaysia’s representative to AICHR, it said in a statement today.
It will be attended by all the representatives on the commission, including from Timor-Leste as an observer, and officials from the Asean secretariat.
Also on the agenda will be the first interface consultation between AICHR and the Asean Senior Officials on the Environment on Tuesday to finalise the text of the Asean Declaration on the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment.
The dialogue will be preceded by a joint site visit to the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia to share knowledge and good practices on environmental sustainability and measures to combat climate change.
AICHR said it will continue deliberations on Malaysia’s proposed Asean declaration on the rights to peace and development – encompassing social, cultural, political and economic aspects – and inclusive growth and sustainable development – key priorities under Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability”.
An initiative to develop Asean conceptual frameworks on peace and conflict prevention, management, and transformation is also on the agenda.
The meeting will also address institutional and operational matters aimed at enhancing AICHR’s effectiveness and reinforcing its mandate to advance human rights in Asean.
