PETALING JAYA: Fifty-five Form 5 students and three teachers at SMK Membakut II in Membakut, Sabah, fell ill on Wednesday due to food poisoning.
The head of the school’s parent-teacher association, Awang Hazim Awang Basir, said the 58 experienced diarrhoea, vomiting and shortness of breath after eating packets of food.
The food was prepared by a caterer for a programme at the school, he said, according to Daily Express.
“All 55 students will be sitting for their SPM examination soon.
“Prior to having the symptoms, they took part in a SPM preparation programme on Tuesday.
“The school engaged a caterer to provide food packets for the students and teachers. The victims were rushed to Membakut health clinic for treatment,” he was quoted as saying.
He said eight students had to be put on drips for several hours at the clinic. The rest experienced light symptoms.
The students were allowed to return home around noon on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, 101 students at SK Chepor in Perak also experienced food poisoning after consuming food and a drink prepared by the school canteen.
Health authorities have shut down the canteen until Oct 8.
