PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested five men in connection with cable thefts at a construction site of the LRT3 project in Shah Alam, causing losses of more than RM2.5 million.
Federal criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain said the suspects were picked up at three locations around 6.30pm yesterday, Harian Metro reported.
It is believed that the five had been stealing cables belonging to Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd for almost a year, Suhaily said.
The suspects, aged between 32 and 41, were employees of the contractor hired for the LRT3 project and had access to the construction site.
“The suspects would steal the cables from the construction site and smuggle them out with a lorry they rented. The cables would then be cut and sold to scrap yards around Klang,” Suhaily was quoted as saying.
The cables were believed to be stolen from one of the LRT3 stations near UiTM Shah Alam. Suhaily said 15 police reports had been lodged over the thefts.
