3 more relief centres open in Kedah as number of flood victims rises

ALOR SETAR: Three more flood relief centres have been opened in Kedah, bringing the total to 11, as the number of evacuees rose from 917 from 293 families last night to 1,359 from 436 families as of 8am today.

The social welfare department said two new centres were opened in the Kota Setar district – at SK Titi Gajah (145 from 46 families) and SMK Kepala Batas (73 from 26 families) – adding to the one at SMK Alor Merah (123 from 35 families).

In Pokok Sena, a new relief centre was opened at Surau Desa Keda Derang, bringing the number of relief centres in the district to five.

The other centres are at Maahad Tarbiyah Islamiyah Derang, Dewan Serbaguna Pokok Sena, SK Bukit Hijau Mukim Derang and Masjid Kampung Baru Jalan Lampam.

Together, they are providing shelter for 734 evacuees from 231 families.

In Kubang Pasu, 284 victims from 98 families are still at relief centres at SMK Changlun, Dewan Lubuk Batu and SK Bandar Baru Darul Aman.
