PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has extended a special donation of RM500 each to the 202 families affected by the floods in Penang last week.
Anwar’s senior political secretary, Shamsul Iskandar Akin, said the families, who are registered with temporary relief centres, will also receive RM1,000 each from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), Sinar Harian reported.
He said Anwar has not forgotten the plight of the flood victims in Penang after surveying the situation in Kedah.
“Hopefully, this assistance can help ease their burden in repairing the damage caused by the floods,” he was quoted as saying after handing over the donations to the nflood victims at the Dewan Besar Sungai Dua today.
The recipients expressed their gratitude, with one planning to use the funds to buy new closets and beds.
On Sunday, DAP national chairman Lim Guan Eng called on Anwar to extend RM1,000 in cash aid to the flood-affected families.
Lim made the appeal at the Penang DAP convention following Anwar’s visit to Kedah, where he said the government had allocated RM1,000 through Nadma and another RM1,000 through the implementation coordination unit of the Prime Minister’s Department to each head of household affected by the floods.
The flash floods in four districts in Penang have seen 623 people evacuated over the past week.
Bernama reported that the last five temporary relief centres in Penang closed in the morning of Sept 21 after the victims returned home.
