JASIN: Two people died and one injured in an accident involving three cars and two lorries on Jalan Jasin-Merlimau in Melaka yesterday.
Jasin district police chief Ahmad Jamil Radzi said the incident occurred at about 11.50am.
He identified the dead as Masitah Mohamed, 27, and Nurul Syakirin Ahmad Mokhtar, 24, who were the driver and passenger in one of the cars, and said they both died at the scene of the accident due to severe head injuries.
He said a 10-year-old boy, a passenger in another car, was injured in the shoulder while the other 10 victims were not injured.
“A preliminary investigation into the accident involving the five vehicles found that they were all travelling in the same direction from Jasin towards Merlimau.
“However, upon arrival at Jalan Jasin-Merlimau, the driver of a one of the lorries, which was carrying a load of rocks, is believed to have attempted to overtake two of the cars but failed.
“When the lorry driver tried to re-enter the original lane, he failed to control the lorry he was driving,” he said in a statement here today.
He added that the lorry was then believed to have collided with the same two cars before hitting the third car carrying the two victims who died. The lorry also collided with another lorry carrying a load of oil palm which had stopped due to road repair.
Meanwhile, in KUANTAN, Pahang, three people, including a mother and her daughter, were killed in an accident involving two vehicles at KM18 Jalan Jerantut-Maran yesterday.
Jerantut district police chief Zukri Muhammad said that in the 6pm accident, Nur Harina Fatihah Syaifol Bahari, 21, died at the scene while her mother, Norazlina Ismail, 44, and Suhaimi Abd Rahman, 42, died at the Jerantut Hospital.
He said Nur Harina’s father, 50-year-old Syaifol Bahari Idris, who works as an ambulance driver, suffered injuries to his knee and body.
He said a preliminary investigation found that the accident occurred when their car, driven by Syaifol Bahari, was heading from Jengka to Jerantut while the second car, driven by Suhaimi, was heading from Jerantut to Felda Gelanggi 2.
“it is believed that both cars collided when the second car veered into the lane heading in the opposite direction,” he said.
